De Smet, South Dakota

Little Town on the Prairie

We drove to De Smet and camped between the twin lakes where Almanzo proposed to Laura. It was the coldest night so far with strong winds but we stayed warm in our little tent on the prairie.

We drove into town and found the place where the Laura Ingalls Wilder Foundation has it’s headquarters, gift shop and tours.

1st we toured the surveyors house  from ‘”on the Shores of Silver Lake”

Got a glimpse of the Ma and Pa restrooms!

Saw the Brewster school house where Laura had her 1st teaching gig in “These Happy Golden Years”

And the school she attended in “Little Town on the Prairie”

While we were there a news crew showed up because today was the day the Laura Ingalls Wilder’s autobiography was finally published and they were excited to interview a family who came all the way from Vermont to visit Laura;s home

We get on the NEWS!

The house that a built!

 Carrie’s Grave.

Mary’s Grave.

Laura and Almanzo’s unnamed son who dies in “The First Four Years”
